Solveig Francis,
born in the UK, grew up in Zambia and now based in London, UK, is a co-author of The Milk of Human Kindness – Defending breastfeeding from the global market & the AIDS industry; part of the Wages for Housework Campaign/Global Women’s Strike since 1974, and co-founded in 1975 of the multi-racial Crossroads Women’s Centre, which she helps run as a trustee of the charity, Crossroads Women. She was part of the delegation to defend and improve mothers’ breastfeeding rights in the ILO Maternity Protection Convention (1999-2000). She advocates in various forums for breastfeeding to be measured, valued and supported as a crucial integral part of women’s unwaged caring work, and for the protection of the rights of breastfeeding mothers currently excluded from existing health or employment policies - women in prison and detention, asylum seekers, women up against the family courts, or working in the informal sector. She is a member of the GWS Land Working Group, and in 2022 was part of the GWS international delegation to learn from and spread the word about the women Self-Help Groups, who are spearheading the Andhra Pradesh Community Managed Natural Farming movement transforming agriculture in India and beyond. She is a mother (bereaved).
